  • Notes
    • "Through Susanna Samwell Alice Freeman and Dr. Joseph Strong have two royal descents. The first, carefuly developed by Clarence Almon Torrey and George Andrews Moriarity, Jr. is from Ethelred II, King of England d. 1016 and Malcolm II, King of Scots d. 1034 via Earls of Northumberland and Dunbar and the Merlay, Gobion, Morteyn, and Giffard families. See the American Genealogist 13 (1936-37); 1-8; 14 (1937-38); 145, 146; and 29 (1953): 215-218 and the Register 75 (
1921): 131-136 and 79 (1925): 358-378 and the 19 volume manuscript collection of G.A. Moriarity at the Society.

The 2nd Royal descent compiled by H. J. Young from the F. N. McNamara, Memorials of the Danvers Family (of Dauntsey and Culworth) (London, 1895) William F. Carter, "The Quatremains of Oxfordshire" (Oxford 1936), Vol 8 of the Moriarity Manuscript Collection, and a few other sources, is from Hugh Capet, King of France d. 996 through the Counts of Hainault, Roucy, Montdidier, and Clermont, and the Clare, Wake, Duston, Grey of Rutherfield, Breton, Quatremain, Bruley, Danvers, Langston, and Giffard families.

The former of these Royal descents is outlined in F.L. Weis and W. L. Sheppard, Jr. "Ancestral Roots of 60 Colonists who came to New England between 1623 and 1650," fifth edition (Baltimore 1976), lines 34, 41-43, and 29A. (The additional Royal descent outlined in 29A, however, through the Corbett, Harley, and Besford Families have been disproved; see "The Genealogist" (New York, 1 (1980); 27-39.

Sir JOhn Throckmorton (d.1445) of Coughton, Warwickshire, and John Danvers (d.ca.1448) of Colthorp, Oxfordshire, ggg and gg grandfathers respectively of Susanna Samwell, were each ancestors of several dozen immigrants to the American Colonies. These kinships are explored in, "The Mowbray Connection," 7; 162-166, 174, 175. Among other New England Colonists, Alice Freeman's nearest kinsman was Rev. William Sargent (1602-1682) of Malden, MA; see Weiss and Sheppard, "Ancestral Roots," line 43.
