3rd Earl of Mulgrave
On 24 August 1658 he succeeded his father and became 3rd Earl of Mulgrave.
He served with the Navy and, in May 1672, was involved with the defeat of the Dutch at Solebay.
From 1673 till 1682 he was a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King Charles II,
then again from May to October 1685 to King James II.
Colonel of the Holland Regiment (afterwards the 3rd Foot) from 1673 to 1682, and 1684 to 1685, he was in command of the forces sent to Tangier. He was given this employment to get him out of the way because his affair with Princess Anne, the future Queen Anne.
On 10 May 1694 he was created Marquess of Normanby
From April 1702 to March 1705 he was Lord Privy Seal.
On 23 March 1703 he was created Duke of the county of Buckingham and of Normanby.
In 1703 he had Buckingham House built which his descendant, Sir Charles Sheffield, sold to King George III in 1761 for £21,000. Buckingham Palace was built on its site in 1825.
He was a commissioner for the Scottish Union in 1706.
