  • Notes
    • 6th Lord of Annandale. Earl of Carrick juo uxoris. 1292 Resigned earldom of Carrick in favor of his son Robert after his wife's death. Summoned in 1297 as Lord Brus.

Robert had no ambitions toward the crown and instead accompanied Edward I. while Prince to Palestine 1270, to the Holy Land with a neighbor, Adam, Lord of Kilconquhar.
By his courage and conduct he acquired great honour.
When Adam was killed, Robert returned with the sad news for his widow, Marjorie, Countess of Carrick who was, in her own right, the holder of a Celtic earldom descended from the ancient Lords of Galloway. Robert undoubtedly saw an opportunity here and married the widowed Countess Marjorie, which, in addition to combining their estates, gave him the additional title of Earl of Carrick. By her he had twelve children, whom the eldest, Robert, born in 1274, was on 27th March, 1306, crowned King of Scotland.
Robert was King Edward's governor of Carlisle.
