To start my story, I should probably backtrack a bit here. I have a Margaret "Peggy" Garner that was born circa 1785 in NC. She appears in McNairy Co., TN in 1830 with her two young boys, Calaway B. Garner that was born in 1809 in TN, and Noah Garner that was born in 1813 also in TN. Rumor has it even today that Peggy was an unwed mother of the two boys. I tend not to believe that rumor, one son maybe, two back then not likely. Peggy, Calaway, Noah and his wife & family are all buried in Cave Springs Cemetery in Chester Co. (area used to be in McNairy Co. when they were buried). If things pan out here and we really do connect up, I'd be happy to send you all the info I have on these folks. Now, Noah Garner is in possession of a large track of land in McNairy county that he and his family lived on. No land deeds can be located on this property, either buying or selling. In TN evidently land can be passed on to heirs with only a will, no land deed required, even up to today there is land that a deed has never been drawn on. So I backtracked and found that a Brice M. Garner had two large land parcels into his name in the year of 1824, one was 292 acres and one 285 acres. These were "land grants" awarded to him. No deeds of him selling can be located. Thinking maybe there was a relation between Brice M. Garner and his land and the land my Noah ended up with, I started investigating Brice. Which in a round about way led me to Obadiah, obviously. In 1817, a John Garner died in Rutherford County, leaving his widow Peggy. Then I found these two census reports on Obadiah:
      Garner, Obediah State : TN
      County : Rutherford Co.
      Year : 1810
      Page # : 0
Age ranges in household : 01010-2101002
      one male age 10-16
      one male age 26-45
      2 females under 10
      one female 10-16
      one female 26-45
      2 slaves
Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1820
      Garner, Obediah State : TN
      County : Rutherford Co.
      Year : 1820
Age ranges in household : 210101-00110
      2 males under 10
      one male 10-16
      one male 16-26
      one male 45 and over
      one female 16-26
      one female 26-45
Notice, please, the 1810 census shows no males under the age of 10, yet the 1820 shows a male between the age of 10-16 (the age Calaway Garner was in 1820 was 11). Almost looks like Peggy and her two boys may be living with Obadiah?? Maybe you could provide some input as to whom is all in Obadiah's house in 1820 please, that sure would help. Now backtrack one more time please. 1798 in Davidson County there is a John Garner that married a Margaret Carothers. A Britain Garner was bondsman (ever heard of a Britain Garner by chance?). In 1803 Rutherford Co. was formed off of Davidson County. I have not proven my theory here, but this is
      what I'm working at:
John Garner married Margaret "Peggy" Carothers in 1798 Davidson Co. Rutherford is formed off of Davidson. John and Peggy have two sons in 1809 and 1813, then John dies in 1817 in Rutherford Co. Looks like Peggy and boys may be living in Obadiah's house in 1820. Obadiah dies in 1822, Brice M. Garner gets land in McNairy County in 1824, and in 1830 Peggy and two boys are in McNairy Co. (Calaway as head of house, one boy 10-16 which is Noah, and one female 20-40 which is Peggy). Noah Garner inherits land from someone. Who?
So that's my story so far. As you can see I've lots of holes to fill in. I know that Obadiah had sons William, Thomas, and Brice M. Did he have any other sons by chance? Or do you know how he was related to this John Garner that died there in 1817??
Another mystery I don't understand, is Brice getting land in 1824, yet in 1829 he is put into Thomas Garner's guardianship for being a minor heir of Obadiah. Was there TWO Brice M. Garners running around back then? Or was he a minor when he got the land in 1824?? I have copies of both of these land grants, and they both definately say Brice M. Garner in 1824. Also would love to know if you know for sure whom Obadiah's father was, was it Thomas, son of Thomas, son of John? I also noticed that there was a Jesse Garner that married a Peggy Guess in Rutherford in 1816. Is he also connected to Obadiah by chance?

I have spent the last 36 hours going over facts on Obediah. The facts that I gave you are correct. The Obediah that the other person gave you is also correct. They are off 2 different lines. One is the Bushnell line & one is of Henry & Catherine Bradley line.

REF: "Garners of Texas A Personal History" by Bascom N. Timmons, Harper & Bros. Publishers, New York, avail. at San Augustine (TX?) Public Library & Houston, Harris Co, TX library: Said John Nance Garner was "Scotch in the male line & Welsh in the other." Mentions the Garners were a well-off family that had "found the way to education & business success" & had fought for both the King vs. the French & for Geo. Washington vs. the King. Also mentions the Garners "had moved west on the outer rim of advancing civilization" but were "not without roots".

REF: Linda K. Jobe: Now, about Obediah Garner the elder..... This cousin here is from Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL and has a sister and cousin, I think that still live there. She has done extensive research and is good, and has been Pres. and other things in our Gen. Soc. She is a very nice person, and very thorough, not that she can never be wrong, but anyway, she gave me the children's names of Thomas Garner who was Obediah's father, which was named in his will, and she has a copy or her sister does of his will. Also, a friend of her sister in AL, pd. a woman for the documentation of the family of Obediah Garner and Helen Nance, and she copied the info, and gave it to me. Here is what I have on this: Now we have checked this out, with our copy of the Garner/Keene book, and we don't believe or can't prove that this Thomas is kin to the Garner/Keene bunch, in fact, we believe this Thomas is kin to our James Garner, the one who died at age 105 in Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL at the home of my Lewis Garner who is the brother of my William Garner, both from Pittsylvania Co., VA, next to Henry Co., VA. Ok, from Thomas Garner's will, Henry Co., VA, dated 6/26/1802, states his wife's name was Sarah (maiden name she says might be "Dodd". Children from the will: Eleanor, m. James Letcher; Obediah, m. Eleanor/Helen Nance, ministers return 1797; Nancy, m. Jesse Heard (he was adm. of the will); Diana, m. ______ Cahill; John, m. Peggy Guess; Thomas, m. 1) Fannie Warren 11/14/1807, and 2) Sarah Warren; William, m. 1) Nancy Davis, and 2) Obedience Haley; and Abel (who was never
adequately identified, but believed by some to be Brice Martin Garner, but this cousin and desc. of his here doesn't think it is Brice. Now the info that was sold as documented on Obediah and Helen Nance is : Obediah was b. 1777 or about and he married Helen/Elinor or Eleanor Nance, Ch:
      1. Jesse, b. 1798, m. Eliz. Caulk 2/2/1826 (have marriage record)
      2. Eve, b. 1800, m. James H. Hill 10/25/1827 (have marr. record)
      3. Will or William, b. 1804, no record of a marriage found
      4. John Nance (1), b. June 15, 1810, m. Jan 5, 1833 to Rebecca Walpole
(middle name believed to be Katherine) (have marr. record)
      5. Brice Martin, b. 1815, m. 1) Sarah Shaffer, 5/10/1837 in Davidson
Co., TN (have marr. record); and 2) Flora Hill Newman (poss. a widow) in 1854 in
Davidson Co., TN (have marr. record)

Now I also checked the Mormon Ancestral file, and this has the same for the children, even though I don't necessarily take the info I see in there as fact everytime, I still try and check out everything everywhere I can find anything on it that can corroborate what I find. Too, the most important thing that convinced me that the above info on their children is partly the marriage records I found in our library and mostly I checked the 1820 TN census for Rutherford Co. and it is true that there are two Obediah Garners in that Co. but one of them, all the children's ages and sexes all checked out perfectly with the info above, and also the ages and all of Obediah and Helen. The other Obediah had in 1820 census, 2 males in the 16 to 26 age column and one male in the 26 to 45 age column, which I would say the latter one could not be the Obediah b. in 1799, but could be one in the other column. In the female side, it only has one female in the household, and she is in the 16 to 26 age column. Under the other Obediah, (which checks out with the documented info) is the following: 2 males under 10 yrs. which would have been John Nance and Brice Martin; 1 male between 10 yrs and 16 yrs, which would be William; 1 male in the 18-26 age column, which would be Jesse; and 1 male over 45 yrs, which would be Obediah, as 1777 is not definate on his b. date, but about then. In the female side, there is one in the 16-26 age column which is Eve, and one in the 26-45 age column which would be Helen/Eleanor. That is all it lists in the 1820 census under that Obediah Garner in Rutherford Co., TN. Also I have a paper I copied from I believe a book in the Dallas Lib. entitled Cole and related families that states that it is said that Obediah is buried in the Garner/Walpole cem. From a book called "Rutherford Co., TN Cem. Vol. I, NW 1/3 of Co.", p. 130, it says: No. 240 WALPOLE-GARNER CEMETERY By: Margaret Green, in Garret & McLain p. 123 Smyrna Quadrangle. On hill above Rock Springs Church and on line fence between Gwynn and Darty farm. (Above lake on Gwynn place) cemetery on Darty side of fence (another source says this cem. is on or near Williamson and Rutherford Co. lines)

These are headstones, but Rebecca was not buried there, as she came to Red River Co., and is buried somewhere close to there, by a dau., I believe, and I have that info somewhere here.
