Chart Gardiner Henry Guion

bought in Paris, 1818
Auvray, Marchand d'Estampes
Duai Malaquis No7 Paris
Mr. Le Capitaine G.H. Guion 1818

Intro

According to small dots Gardiner Guion painted on his chart, he made one or perhaps more private trips in France.
Anna Mary his daughter was 20 years old in 1818. Maybe he made the trip together with his daughter.
1. a. Le Havre - Paris, probably june(?) 1818. (chart 2

b. Paris and a circular tour south of Paris, june - probably third week of july 1818 (chart 2
c. Paris - Bayonne - St Sebastian along the Atlantis coast, july - nov 1818 (?) (charts 2, 1, 4, 5
On this trip he visited clearly some coastplaces where he had some action. See Royal Naval Biography or memoirs of the services - action at Basque Roads (Nr Rochelle)
2. St. Sebastian - Bayonne - probably Marseille or Toulon along the Spanish border and the Mediterranean coast (charts 4, 5, 6
There are several unclear entrances.
  1. The text between Bayonne and St. Sebastian is written with pencil first and seem to be overwritten with tincture later. Two of the words I can't read and understand
  2. The date's seem to be "mixed up"
  3. Between 2  and 3 october 1818 he travels from Rochefort to Saintes. A jounrney of about 45 km that will have taken abt 4-6 hours on horseback or by coach. The dots on Gardiners Chart don't follow the road but make a curious curve. He may have visited Saint Savenien, the place where Capt Daniel Guion, his possible ancestor lived
  4. North West from Mont-de-Marsan is a place Lipostey. This place he obviously didn't visit during his journey. Here he wrote with a pencil 2 Nov 1827 ??? Could this entrance have something to do with his last cruize with the Tribune 1822 - 1826
  5. At Nime his dots ends. I can only guess where he went afterwards. Maybe he went back to Bayonne, or he went on to Marseille/Toulon. The last possibility is more likely to my opnion. He spend a lot of time surveying and blocking the harbor of Toulon. See Royal Naval Biography or memoirs of the services - action at the coast of Toulon, Philomel rescued by HMS Repulse
  6. Also on his chart at the Mediteranean coast of France is the Tartar, the only ship not mentioned on his Memorandum of the services
