  1. 2.  Antonio Bertolacci was born in 1776 (son of Pasquale Bertholacci); died on 10 Aug 1833 in Forges-les-Eaux.

    Notes:

Assistant in the office of Secretary of State, which was filled by the Honourable Frederic North

The British retiring from Corsica, he accompanied that Gentleman to England, and afterwards to Ceylon, where he held several situations in His Majesty's Civil Establishment of that Colony.

6th Civil Auditor General of British Ceylon.

Around 1799 he followed his patron, the Hon. Frederick North, to Ceylon as his secretary, but soon became firstly Postmaster-General and later Comptroller-General of Customs.

He became acting Civil Auditor General on 30 January 1811, succeeding Richard Plasket, and held the office until 1 September 1814, when he was succeeded by John D'Oyly

Another of the first batch of Civil Servants who made a valuable contribution to the history of Ceylon is ANTHONY BERTOLACCI.

Percival and Cordiner had published their books on Ceylon before Bertolacci, but the latter's work was of quite a different character and covered entirely new ground.

It was published in 1817 under the title of " A Yiew of the Agricultural, Commercial, and Financial Interests of Ceylon," and has been described by a competent authority as " the only work ever written on the economics or the economic history of Ceylon."

Bertolacci also left behind a memorandum on the coinage of Ceylon in manuscript.

A few words on Bertolacci's career may not be uninteresting.

He was a Corsican by birth and had been an Assistant in North's office in Corsica. Being a man of some ability, Bertolacci had come under the favourable notice of North, who invited him to accompany him to Ceylon as Secretary. Bertolacci showed such a remarkable aptitude for work that in sis months' time he was appointed Postmaster General.

He discharged the duties of " Commissioner of Musters," presumably a sort of military office, in addition to those of his substantive appointment, and also officiated for a short time as " Sitting Magistrate for the Pettah and suburbs of Colombo as far as Grandpass."

He then successively held the appointments of Garrison Storekeeper, Deputy Paymaster General, and Controller General of Customs, finally acting as Civil Auditor General in 1811.

He does not appear to have been confirmed in this appointment.

His retirement in 1814 on a pension of ?500 a year was said to be due to his having lost favour with Governor Maitland.
